Ohio Scholarship Donation Credit
Ohio SGO Tax Credit Calculator
Ohio gives you a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for gifts to a certified Scholarship Granting Organization: up to $750, or $1,500 for married couples filing jointly. Find out how much of that credit your Ohio income tax can actually use.
Good to know
- It only reduces tax you owe. The credit can bring your Ohio income tax down to $0 but not below, and unused credit doesn't carry over to another year.
- You get it back when you file. Your gift lowers your Ohio tax bill, so it shows up as a bigger refund or a smaller amount due.
- Married couples can give together. If you file jointly, one gift of up to $1,500 can count, as long as the receipt lists both spouses' names.
- Keep your receipt. You'll need the SGO's receipt with your name (both names for a joint gift), the amount and the date, plus proof of payment such as a bank statement.
- Money gifts only. Cash, checks, cards and IRA charitable distributions qualify. Donor-advised fund grants, property and volunteer time don't.
- State income tax only. The credit doesn't reduce school district or city income taxes.
- Federal taxes. The part of your gift covered by the Ohio credit generally can't also be deducted as a charitable contribution on your federal return.
This calculator gives an educational estimate based on Ohio Revised Code 5747.73 and Ohio's 2025 and 2026 income tax rates. It isn't tax advice and doesn't cover every Ohio adjustment or credit. Your actual credit depends on your final return, so check with a tax professional if you're unsure.
